SARAH BARROW MAKES OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION SPOT
With Partner Monique McCarroll from Southampton, Plymouth Diving’s Sarah Barrow finished 7th in the Synchronised Women’s Platform event at the World Cup in Beijing and with it, earned GB one of only 8 places available in that event at the Beijing Games in August.
The World Cup, held at the now famous Water Cube, aquatics venue has so far provided Great Britain with 4 valuable Olympic spots in the mens synchronised 3m, womens platform (2) and the womens synchronised platform. The men and women in the 3m failed to secure automatic qualification places, but will have the opportunity to compete in a “dive off” on Monday for the last few remaining Olympic spots.
For Sarah it has been the most exciting and pressurised event of her career but her work is still not over. In June, British Diving will hold its Olympic Trials to determine exactly which divers will take the spots earned this week at the World Cup. Earning the spot, does not earn you the right to compete, which is tough for those divers like Sarah and Brooke who have done a superb job this week in China. However it does mean that the door is not closed for divers like Tonia Couch who missed selection for the World Cup, but who is still not out of the running for an Olympic spot.
