Plymouth Diving Trio amongst the country’s best!
Three of the Junior Elite Squad from Plymouth Diving, coached by Mexican High diver, Fito Gutierrez, were in action recently in Leeds at the English National Elite Junior Diving Championships.
This event also served as the trials for the Junior Great Britain team at the European Junior Championships in Minsk, Belarus.
Diving in her final ever Junior championships for the club, Jenny MacDonald, who is also the longest serving member of the diving squads was in action in her favourite event, the 10 metre platform.
Jenny had a fantastic Junior British Championships in January where she finished second and was looking to medal at the English event to finish off her junior diving career. She was diving great in the preliminary and actually won it securing her place in the final. In the final she just lacked a bit of tariff to be able to beat off her tough opposition but did enough to secure the bronze medal.
Jenny who also coaches for Plymouth Diving goes off to university in the autumn and the club wish her well.
Next up was Kyle Prior who is a springboard specialist and a former member of the Junior Great Britain Olympic Programme had been debating his future in the sport recently but came back to form in emphatic style by claiming the bronze medal in the 3 metre event.
Kyle now has the hardest set of dives in the country for a junior diver, a list which would not look out of place at the Olympic Games in fact, and now needs to work hard with a focus on qualifying for the 2012 Olympics in four years time.
And finally came their younger team mate Aaron Walters who was diving in the extremely competitive boys 14/15 years group. He was up against Chris Mears from Southampton who is ranked 4th in Europe in his age group and although Aaron couldn’t quite match Chris for difficulty in the 3 metre event he fought hard and finished in the silver medal position ahead of James Milton from Sheffield who was selected to dive at the European Junior Championships in the platform event.
All three results were as a result of hard work by the divers and their coach Fito, who said of their performances;
“The three main things I look for in an Elite diver are determination, hard work and natural ability. All three of these divers have these qualities and because they work well to the goals we set down they have achieved some great performances.”
Other members of the Plymouth Diving team who competed were Emma Barrow (5th place 16-18 platform) and Harry Glover (7th place 16-18 platform).
Fito was selected to travel to Minsk as part of the Great Britain team as a judge and also to get experience.
