NATIONAL AGE GROUP CHAMPIONSHIPS

SOUTHAMPTON, MARCH 2008

A small team of 11 divers travelled to Southampton for the National Age Group Championships.

It’s the rung below the Elite performance level of the sport and gives divers an opportunity to compete for top National honours.  For some divers, this provides a stepping stone to the elite level and for others, this is the most important competition of the year and their chance to shine on the National stage.

Despite fielding a small Team, Plymouth’s divers were keen to show that Thomas Daley isn’t the only star from the City as they picked up 3 gold medals, a silver and a bronze, with several very unlucky fourth places.

The competitions were long and tough, so these were excellent results.

Elliott Hatherley and Emma Barrow, continued a long tradition of success on the platform for Plymouth, both winning gold  in the 16-18 years boys & girls platform events.

Elliott also teamed up with Harry Glover to win gold in the synchronised 3m event, while Harry won bronze in the 16-18 boys platform.

Another platform medal came for Ashley Hendrick who won a silver in the 12-13 Boys Platform.

Daniel Olssen was the unluckiest member of the team, with two 4th places and a 5th in the 14-15 years boys events.  Charlotte Donoghue also lucked out with a 4th place in the 12-13 years girls platform and 5th on 1m and in the synchronised 1m, she finished 4th with partner Jenny Bunsell.

There was another painful 4th for Ashley Hendrick and Drew Cunningham in the Boys synchronised 1m event.

Drew also picked up two extremely well-deserved top 6 finishes, in the 12-13 boys 1m & platform events.  There was yet another top 6 finish for Jack Glover in the 14-15 Boys Platform, despite diving with a broken finger!

Kayleigh Sinclair made a spectacular debut at this level, picking up a hard earned 6th place in the 10-11 girls 3m event, whilst Jenny Bunsell was 6th in the same age group on 1m and platform.  Hannah Waters was also making her debut and performed steadily to finish with 13th and 14th places.

Ten divers recorded at least one top 6 finish – a remarkable achievement.  The number of fourth places show the majority of these divers are really knocking on the door to greater success and looking to follow in the footsteps of their better known team mates.
