Harrogate NOVICES 2008

Plymouth are Team Champions!!

The Plymouth diving Novice team were in sparkling form at a recent team event in Harrogate.

After the long haul trip up north the team started the competition as they meant to go on.

Winning their preliminary competitions were 8 year old Matthew Dixon and 9 year old Shanice Lobb. They duly qualified for the finals  with Matthew being joined by Euan Cunningham (8) in the boys final. Ollie Piper (8) was close to making the final in 9th place and Katie Rollinson (10), Summer Herbert (10) and Shana Vallance (10) also dived well finishing in 16th, 17th and 24th places.

Shanice was outstanding in her final beating off hot competition from four divers from the highly regarded Crystal Palace team to take the gold medal. Euan improved his fifth place in the morning to a silver medal in the afternoon which he was delighted with with Matthew having to settle for fifth place this time.

In the girls 8/9 event Abbey Douglas (8) made her final in fifth place with Eloise King (8) from Plymouth just missing the final by 6 points in 9th place. Jessica Lidstone (8) in her first major event had a great day just letting her nerves get to her slightly but did well to finish with some good dives. In the final Abbey did some of her best dives all day and finished in 2nd place!

In the boys 14 + age group Plymouth divers Connor Figg (14), Matthew King (14) and Charlie Wood (14) all made their final with fantastic diving. In the final Connor just pipped teammate Matthew by less than two points to take gold with Matthew in silver. Charlie narrowly missed the medals in 4th place. Pete Adler (15) just missed the final in 7th place.

In the girls 14+ age group Plymouth again had a great preliminary event with Joanne Cowen (14) and Millie Wood (14) both making the final. Once in the final Joanne upped her game and took the gold medal from another member of the Crystal Palace team and Millie just didn’t quite have enough to make the medals and finished in 5th place. Not far from making the final was Laura Elver (16), Lauren Norfolk (14) and Jade Walker-Hall (14) who finished in 9th, 12th and 21st.

In the boys 12/13 age group Plymouth had some strong divers Ben Holton qualified in 2nd place, Laurence Coath qualified in 4th and Alfie Wills qualified in 5th place. Three finalists! In the final Laurence showed his experience and stepped up a gear to take the gold medal ahead of strong opposition from Dublin who were 2nd and 3rd. Ben was unlucky in 4th place and Alfie stayed in 5th. Filippo Bombieri (12) and Liam Chilcott (12) were diving in their first away meet and did well finishing in 11th and 12th places.

In the boys 10/11 age group first timers Owen Weymouth and Thomas Dixon did well against good opposition to finish not far from the finals knowing what they needed to do next time to get closer. This was also the case in the girls 12/13 where Lucy Allan (11), Abi Braddon (11) and Olivia Dixon (12) finished in 16th, 18th and 29th places.

Overall fantastic medal winning performances and great team support meant that everyone rose to the occasion and Plymouth came away with a very justified TOP TEAM trophy! Well done to all concerned!!!
