Learning to compete

Competitions aren’t always about success.  They are also about learning your trade.

Some divers revel in the competition experience and will be successful from day one.  For others, it will be a part of their diving training.  Just like learning a new dive, learning to compete can be a long and frustrating process, but it is a skill that can be learnt, developed and improved upon.

Sally Freeman always takes great delight in telling everyone how badly she did in her first National Age Group Championships.  She was one of those who took a long time to learn how to compete, but ultimately, determination and patience saw her achieve her dreams, with two Commonwealth Games and an Olympics behind her, she can chuckle when she looks back at her early competition experiences.
